SEASONS
Begin the song of season's turning,
turning the year round, marc by marc.
Mark well the pace, Sunrifter's dance,
dance to its measure, last and first.
First and fiercest, face the winter:
winter wind blows bitter cold,
cold as death and pain and sorrow,
sorrow deep as drifting snow.
Snow and sorrow, shadow-chains,
chains of ice, melt and set free,
free as falling rain in spring.
Spring is next with sweetest song:
song of birds, Sunrifter's rising,
rising hopes of youthful heroes.
Heroes' hearts now join the dance,
dance of leaves, of flowers growing,
growing swiftness, strength and grace,
grace of the gods, till summer's glory.
Glory shines in the summer sky;
sky-ruling Sunrifter's strength burns bright.
Bright as gold is the desert heat;
heat shimmers on the Lake of Valorn.
Valorn basks in a blaze of light,
light in the eyes of lovers dancing,
dancing, turning, rise and fall.
Fall will follow in fruitful time,
time of tree-gold, leaves red-burning,
burning bonfires, guilds gathering,
gathering close their beloved brothers.
Brothers and sisters strengthen the walls,
walls against winter, of love and faith,
faith in the gods, and heroes' honor.
Honor each other, one and all.
All join the dance; rejoice and hail.
Hail Fall Festival! Let it begin;
begin the song of season's turning.
