Did you remember to equip your new items after you bought them? I checked the sewers, and I cant replicate this bug, if it is one. I can see fine, even with 1 lightlevel equipped.

I'm using hte flaming broardsword and can see fine in this area. I'm wondering if it's got something to do with the total light value as opposed to an individual item.

You can have a 127 light items on you before experiencing a problem. This may be one of those things we'll have to wait till someone can reproduce it before starting work.

You could just make a test character and give it the items that were causing the problem and see if it happens again. Quicker than waiting for another player to stumble across the right combination of items (and possibly location...)

I did this and it worked fine. The only thing I can think of is that he mistakenly believed the items were equiped. I ran through this just fine with only those 2 items.
