Spelling error while attacking

Postby aerthiamar » Tue Jun 13, 2006 11:52 pm

(6/13/06; 7:38 p.m. EST) I just fought a Fire Spirit (alone) and got the following as part of the battle description:

Aerthiamar fumbles their attack!

This is not a spelling error. This is a matter of something improper being more handy than 'so and so fumbles his/her attack.' This also occurs in other areas of the game for the same reason.

*bows to Xia*

I thought perhaps that might be it, but wasn't sure. I know that other messages just say something about "THE" attack/creature/what have you - perhaps this might be a way out that doesn't alert the grammar police?

It was purposefully put in to annoy Topaz.

Couldn't you change it to either:
Player fumbles the attack!
or
Player's attack is fumbled!

Or the mildly different:
Player misjudges the attack, missing completely!

That would address the appearance of pluralism (Legion like it, however), and the possessive.

In that case, I would recommend "Character" or "Adventurer", rather than "Player".

The text strings as you see them are actually only temporary placeholders and people with much better grammer "learninization" than me will be able figure that stuff out :) Also, the functions that perform the substituions are being expanded to include per script customizable substitutions so I can include any place holders the grammar police think I should, as well as the rules on what to substitute it with and when. As part of the first stage of deployment I just wanted something out there without all the finetuning until I was sure the existing code was bug free.

Carlo, I meant "Dagobert fumbles the attack" or "Mylor fumbles the attack".
Apologies for not being more exact.

Thanks Cory!
