Problem with Voting

Postby Anc@l@gon the Black » Wed Jul 02, 2003 3:00 am

Ok, when I vote for the day, it allows me to vote more than once within the 24 hours. I think I'm the only 1 on here who can do it. I found this out when I was just seeing if I could vote again. This was like the 1st or 2nd day when I knew nothing about voting or anything about the game. Ben said to my friends that it's because I don't have a static IP. Don't know what the hell it is but it allows me to vote more than once. I guess that wraps it up. Sorry for not reporting it sooner.

If it is due to a static IP problem (or lack of one more to the point) then this will affect almost everyone on a dial up account.

Probably the only way around this would be to use cookies... dunno what the technical boffs think of this?

Why not just store a last_voted field? If it was more than 24 hours ago there's no vote. Else the vote counts and the last_voted field is updated to now()...

I just GUESSED it had something to do with non-static IPs. Im really quite computer retarded, when it comes to networking and internet.

Thank you, I'm trying to reproduce the bug. If I can't I will use my best guess for a solution.

How are you limiting the voting to once a day at the moment Cory?

Currently every click is recorded to a database with their IP, I even delve into the headers to defeat proxies. Its supposed to be simple, a select on the IP finds if it exists and if not add it. The odd thing is that the same IP is being entered more then once still and its only effecting some people. There are some very obvious holes people are using to get around it right now that I am taking steps to fix.

Why not just use their username and timestamp? You could even add a last_vote field to the user table so that you don't even need to make an extra query to get the info if you've already retreived the user record...

Then you have to sign up to vote and I don't want that. I want your friends to vote for you whether they play or not :)

Ah. Why not just use cookies that last 24 hours then? You can check for the cookie and if it's still there no vote. If it's not, set it.

You can do a quick check to set and unset a cookie and if that fails let them know they need cookies enabled to vote.
