Mysteries of Valorn

Postby JezzTheWarrior » Sun Apr 27, 2008 9:17 am

Calling All Writers of Valorn!

The Clan of the Shrouded Bunnies hereby announces a new project and contest for all Valornians.

The Clan is compiling a new book called Mysteries of Valorn to be made available to all in the hutch library. The book will consist of tales, poems and riddles that will point adventurers to quests without giving away any "spoilers" or compromising the achievements of those who undertake the quests.

All entries must be IC in nature and able to be told upon the streets of Valorn without resorting to private messages or other OOC devises to explain them. The object is to provide mentors, teachers and adventurers with a resource of material to be used for either helping people in the right direction for a quest while remaining completely in character or simply for entertainment purposes while quaffing a brew at the Inn.

Because of the volume of quests available for Valornians, the contest will be divided into several installments, each installment dealing with one or two quests.

By submitting an entry for the contest all entrants hereby waive the right to any royalties from the use of their work. The best entries will be published in the book along with the name of the author for all to see and use. The winning authors will also receive a renumeration to offset the cost of parchment and quills.

An example of something that might be considered for Mysteries of Valorn:

Under the master's watchful eye
The Apprentice stokes the fire
And works with goodly diligence,
To avoid the Master's ire.
He'd give a blade, in training made
To those who can aspire,
To bring the thing that quivered once
In Dundee's sludge and mire.

No it doesn't have to rhyme. It could be a short story or a riddle.

Items that will NOT be considered for the book are:

Anything that gives precise directions such as "the adventurer took three steps to the west and one to the north and there he found it!".
Anything that uses OOC terminology
Anything that would be in violation of the rules of Dark Grimoire should it be told aloud on the street.

The First Quests Open for Entries are:

The Training Sword and The Lesser Amulet of Fortitude

Entrants may submit an entry for each quest mentioned. Entries should be submitted via PM to me on this forum so as not to risk spoiling anything for others.

Closing Date for entries for the above quests is May 12th. At that time the next installment of the competition will be announced.

Neat idea, where will all these go once they've been judged and compiled? Will it be like HA and searchable by all?

And the winners of the first section of the contest are... ***drum roll****

For the Training Sword.. Azure Greenhills!
For the Lesser Amulet of Fortitude.. Topaz!

I will catch up with both of you to hand over your quill and parchment allowance. The winning entries will be published in the Mysteries of Valorn.

The Training Sword
Once a young apprentice smith grew tired of the constant cleaning and polishing and even the sharpening that he needed to do. He looked about for a way to simplify his life and he found it. It is a rarely known fact that hardened jellies work wonderfully to sharpen and clean a blade.

Of course his master sets him many tasks, and he has little time to leave the forge and seek out the items he needs. So he stands there, watching the forge in Dundee, and trying to come up with ways to get the items he needs. He can’t slip away for he’s watched carefully by the weapon maker and armorer.

Instead, he has hit upon a cunning plan. He will make swords, thus perfecting his skills and making his master happy enough to perhaps release him from apprenticeship one of these days. The cost for these weapon? It’s not much; he will happily trade with any who stop by with the items he needs to make the rest of his job easier.

You might want to go talk with him, especially if you’re in need of a blade.

Azure Greenhills 83729

Lesser Amulet of Fortitude

Beneath the streets your path will lead,
to seek a creature great with greed.
A rogue must open ere you find
the key the creature leaves behind.
Take the key upon your quest
where warriors take their well-earned rest.

I've got to say the judges had a really tough time choosing between the entries this time.. We've picked 3 entries for the book and each will get a prize

Purazon for the Iron Knights Shield.. Purazon again for the Strange Boots and Narian also for the strange boots.

Both of the Strange Boots entries will be published in the Mysteries of Valorn. There were some others we would have like to put in there also but I'm afraid we had to stop choosing :-)

Looking forward to the next set of entries

I'll catch up with you winners as soon as I can to give you your quill and parchment allowances.

Jezz

Purazon's entries
Strange Boots
Be not afraid of stench and mire,
The swamp Path trip is not so dire,
Down the hole you must go,
For an old blacksmith strange skills to show.
But first an item you must provide,
A crater is where the creatures reside.

Iron Knight shield

A warrior great in castle small
Hands out shields to one and all.
The case is locked, the key is gone,
Swallowed by a viper spawn.
Scourge the swamp far and deep
Until you see the viper creep.
In darkness deep you must prevail;
Without a light you'll surely fail.

Narians Entry
There was, well still is, a great artisan in metal working who lived in Dundee. As he advanced in years the demands upon him grew and he began to withdraw from public life. No one knows exactly why but he left Dundee and is said to be living in a cave near Duberry’s Island. Though he is more of a hermit now he has never been able to give up his love for metal working. If you are able to lay your hands upon some strange metal perhaps he will make you something nice to wear.

The Junk Golum Big Rusty Saw

Amulet of Evilsbane

Sceptre of Death

The rules are posted at the beginning of this thread. Closing date is June 15th!

We would really love to see more stories from people so don't think you have to write poetry to enter. Thank you to all who've entered the previous sections of the contest and please... keep up the great work!
