Sand sculpting day

Postby purazon » Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:39 pm

Image

The purpose of this event is to gather at "The Beach-Shoreline" and start - you guessed it - sand sculpting. This is first and foremost intended as a roleplaying 'event', but off course the sand sculpt I like best will recieve a prize.

On june 25th you will be able to find me at the beach-shoreline between 9:00 AM GMT and 24:00 GMT (midnight), but only during Valornian daytimes (between the 1st and 12th marc).

You will be free to sculpt anything from Trinald, from creatures and items to miniature buildings and life-size characters.
The event doesn't mean you have make page-long preparations to participate. The descriptions of the sculpts (and the sculpting itself) can be as easy or as complicated as you wish. (so it’s not like the recent cooking-contest, where a higher level of preparation was required).

You are NOT limited to one sculpt. If you enjoy yourself at the event, there's no reason why you shouldn't make another.

Any more questions? Feel free to ask in this thread or send me a pm in game. http://www.darkgrimoire.com/cshow12387.html

EDITED: to add the flyer

Sand sculpting roleplaying tip:

KEEP IN MIND THE LIMITATIONS OF SAND SCULPTURE.

Typically, sand sculpture will not allow you to produce certain stances/figures. For example a human figure that is standing with their arm pointing straight-out from the body, etc. is not possible.
For these kinds of projects, sculptors use wood, bronze, marble, etc. .... not sand....

Sand sculpting role playing tip:

The importance of WATER:

Basicly, you have to use wet sand for sculpting. Water is what holds your sculpture together

There are basicly two methods of getting wet sand:
1. You can find damp sand on the beach-Estuary by digging through the upper dry layer of sand. Just use a small shield, or a shovel if you have one,... to dig up the damp sand and use it for your sculpture.
2. Of course you may want to add extra water: for this buckets will be provided to the Enchanted Ticket Booth at the Southern Valorn Shoreline Dock, where they will be sold for 12 silver. If you're too poor to buy your own bucket, I'll buy it for you.

Sand sculpting role playing tip:

TOOLS:
Anything can of course be used as tools,...from simply your own two hands, over, sticks and stones, to the more complicated spoons, and knives.

I recommend a small knife for sculpting, and a toothpick from Cerbie's for the 'really' detailed work.

I slightly changed the location above. Of course you can't build sand sculpts in the shallows of the Estuary itself. I propose we meet on the Shoreline where 'a little to the west' lies a rock formation and where the sand is wet, ideal in fact to build sand sculpts.

Well, tomorrow is the big day.

----------------------------------
1. At the beach - shoreline
2. During Valornian daytimes (no use trying to sculpt in darkness)
3. Buckets and daggers will be available from the enchanted ticket booth nearby.
4. If you wish to use other sculpting tools you need to bring them yourself.
----------------------------------

Let's make it a fun day and pray that it doesn't rain....
I'm looking forward to seeing some nice sculpts.
The best 5 sculpts will get a prize.

To help you all in the dreaded time zone calculations process, (certainly because of the misunderstanding sometimes between GMT & BST)

Below is a clock that gives the actual GMT Time.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/

You can come and sandsculpt any time between 9 (am) and 24 (midnight), but only when Sunrifter shines. ((because I also need to get some things done in RL and can't hang around here 'all' day)).

A summary of the sculpts standing at the beach.
They won't stand for long, for that's the nature of sand. But the memory of a beach filled with sand sculptures will allways bring a smile to my face.

Standing at the beach after first part:

1. "Mire hag surrounded by mire gems": scooped figure with long cloak and long nose. (well, as long as possible in sand)

2. "Guardian of the waves": a warriorlike figure (including helmet, armour, gauntlets, pauldrons and a broad blade), standing upright.

3. "A resting Wyrm" : a dragonlike figure (dyed blue) with scales, curled up, surrounded by carved miniature pieces of armour

Standing at the beach after the second part:

4. "Caer Laleldan" including gateway, detailed throne room, balcony and garden with memorial bench.

5. "Octavia Belcatata. Statue For a Valorn Idol"

6. "Thinking Monk" (by myself, something from Purazon's youth)

7. "Misshapen Lump" (shows that sand sculpting isn't always easy)

8. "Sand angel" (not really a sculpt but shows that 'sand fun' can be easy)

Standing at the beach after the third part:

9. "Swamp viper peering up from the water surface"

10. "Sand leopard on a rock" (looking very dangerous with those real fangs)

11. "Portrait of High Queen Cordelia" ((including two blue eyes and holding a scroll "I command you to laugh"))

12. "The Strifegorge fortress, embedded in the mountains" (nicely detailled)

13. "A welcoming into the Bunny Hutch"

Standing at the beach after the fourth part:

14. "I'm only a note away" (A flying bird that delivers messages)

15. "Kasi's towers" (nice towers in a circle)

16. "Fartown will allways have a small place in my heart" (including miniature cannon in the tower in the middle, grasslike effect created outside Fartown's walls)

17. "The Demon That Islander Kicked into Miltown Inn and that is now stuck in the wall" (also known as snarling horned beast roaring a challenge ot the sky with 'BUY ME'-sign)

That's it! It was an enjoyable day for me. I hope you can say the same. I wish to thank all the participants for giving their best, and actually roleplaying (in stead of a fully prepared play). I also wish to say 'thank you' to all those who supported me in this (you all know who you are).... Thank you!!

Well, there were some 'very' difficult choices to be made. I've looked again at the sculpts and and decided upon:

I'm also glad some people had the creativity to accessorize their sculpt with in-game items (e.g. gems for eyes, real fangs....). An excellent idea to make use of these in-game items and a testemony to your creativity. Well done.

The treasure boxes will be awarded to
Starling Lackland: for her excellent sculpt of Strifegorge and adding ad rem ideas to the sculpt.

Azure: for her blue Wyrm, she had gloves to protect her hands from the dye, but decided to get her hands dirty to get a much-needed feel of the sand under her hands. The effect of that will be visable for a couple of days

Weapon primitives will be awarded to

Topaz: for her detailled sculpt of Caer Laleldan and her experimentation on 'how to do the lake'

Jamath: for his excellent idea on how to make a Fartown cannon that 'looks as if it's shooting'

Sreip: for making a 'quiet' Milltown Inn Demon .

for giving me such an enjoyable time, a smaller prize (a random teleportation scroll) will be awarded to
Valina Ravenclaw, Bryg MaEve, Lessa Rider, Skyelark and Kasi.

I suggest you contact me for your prize when you notice I'm around. I'll do the same.

Oh wow. Thanks Purazon! I had a great time. Wish I had better timing and had seen everyone else's sculptures!
Congrats to everyone!
