Summerfaire Poetry

Postby Topaz » Sun May 27, 2007 2:39 am

During the upcoming Summerfaire celebrations, the Remnants of Kimald will be sponsoring a poetry contest. The poetry for this contest should be written on any of the following three subjects:

1. Heroes and/or heroic deeds

2. Love

3. Summer in Valorn

There will be a winner in each of these three categories. During the Summerfaire, these winners will perform their poems in the theater of the Remnants of Kimald guild house, at which time the grand prize winner will be selected out of the three.

Contestants may enter in as many of the three categories as they wish (but must specify for which category an entry is intended, i.e. you may not write one poem including all three subjects and enter it for all three categories -- choose one). However, only one PLAYER may enter -- no mutiple entries via alts!

NOTE CHANGE IN DEADLINE: The deadline for entrants is 12 noon EDT on Friday, June 1.

Please direct any questions to me via PM.

Topic : Love.

Love discovered, innocence found ,a journey begun
Enchanted! Captivated, breathless, sighs, a time of song
Vibrance, colorful, beautiful life has become
Equilibrium, delirium, passion all rolled into one
A delicacy set on a plate, begging you to partake
Open this book, turn the page, happiness will be found laying in wait

Love nurtured, contentment, life touched by a spell of protection
Exaltation! Hearts sheltered, love grows and the flowers blossom
Droplets of dew radiating every flower
Glistening before the sun, a soul filling with nectar
Love evolving daily into something so much greater
Life finds reason with the entwining of hearts together

Love neglected, withered petals fading in the sun
Webs broken, thread severed, nothing left but to start falling
Disharmony, pain and agony, being cast from grace
The fable lost, horror takes its place
Prayers, beseeching fate, spin a web once more
Hurting, questioning, every decision unsure
Lost, a soul depleted forevermore
Watching love die, is a tragedy I hope never to endure

Love fulfilled, a bud that survived the stormy weather
Touched by fire, emerging from the ashes even brighter
Heart and soul at peace, contentment now turns to euphoria
Journey complete, afterlife beckoning, truly bonded forever
The stories of love found, nurtured, lost, and fulfilled if you listen
Among the stars destinies are written
For loves exist within us all it is a part of our soul
Find it, hold it, and life with are beautiful to behold
Love freely given never goes away
For it is a gift to give even if it is not requited this day
Keep on giving love, and perhaps someday
True love from someone special will come your way.

Summer Love

LIke the gentle sun,
which over us lightly laughs.
Like the dewdrop,
on a verdant blade of grass.
Like a fine summer day,
spent staring at clouds as they pass...

Be still, heart which flutters
with wild wings.
Be silent, soul which
when near you sings.

Be calm, hands that shake
in tiny tremors of delight.
Be fair, face that flushes
everytime you enter my sight.

Like that first sip of wine,
leaving me so heady,
yet still leaving me needing,
to sink into your eyes so fine.

A pain so sweet,
yet so divine.
My heart you may keep,
in such love sublime...

Topic: Heroes

Forgotten Ones

The greatest heroes of all time,
underappreciated and unnoticed.

Selfless, sacrificing all for you.
Not a moment do they ever rue,
being there for you when your down and blue.

Warriors, protecting broken hearts
and scraped up knees.
Knights, defending troubled minds
and a soul that grieves.

In that warm embrace,
safe at last.
In that gentle smile,
all fears may pass.
No matter what, they
will guard your back.
Supporting you as you
set your life on track.

Yet for me, they are but a
memory, still fresh within my
heart and mind.
That gentle touch,
that heart so kind.
Mother and Father,
my heroes of all time...

Ensnared

We started off as friends,
With a bond unbreakable,
I grew a certain fondness,
A fondness unspeakable.

As time went on,
I made a new love,
But it wasn't you,
Away my fondness I did shove.

Pain in my heart,
Pain in my soul,
As I realised my mistake,
My choice ran a-foul.

But my love remained,
For him and for you,
Do not take it wrongly,
I love you through and through.

In fact, I still do,
But I cannot show it,
Others will laugh,
Though shockingly it will hit.

So someday, sometime,
Maybe I will confess,
But for now, my dear,
I will not love you less.

Love entry

Seasick on Love - an Acrostic

Fluttering butterflies dancing
around within my stomach.
Love and lust running through my veins,
little bursts of intensity.
I see you, but I don't know what to say so I
nervously laugh and
giggle uncontrollably.

Is this the one?
Never knowing, I can only hope.

Lie to me, tell me you love me too. I don't want it to be
over; I don't want it to end. My
vanity would be shaken with out this
emotional boat ride I keep coming back to....

Hero Entry
Accidentally A Hero: An Initiate's [almost] Sonnet

There’s total release as I crumble down.
Slowly and rapidly, I quickly break.
Frozen and still, I crouch on the ground -
paralyzed by fear I pray to be safe.
I am ashamed and try to hide -
hide in the darkness where none will judge
my weakness, or worse take another side.
I hate myself now and I begrudge.
Not happy or proud to be like this,
I slowly stand and find the light’s strength.
Sunrifter warms me with a kiss.
I came this far measured in love and length.
Standing here today - not liability,
silly me, thinking I’d not gain ability.

Summer Entry
A Ghazal for Summer

Sunrifter stares down -
the gaze of the gods watching.

The heat hangs heavily.
Birds rest, wings half-spread watching.

Dogs pant in the heat -
lethargically, listlessly watching.

Dried cracked fields.
the farmers look to the skies watching.

Sudden storm, swift showers.
As lighting scratches across the sky, I watch.

Birds take wing as the air lightens.
In the sky above us they watch.

The great greening of the plains:
contentedly the bos watch.

Images of summer across Valorn.
From the inns, fields, and forests we watch.

We must remember

It is true that not everyone remembers the fallen.
It is true some want to forget it all.
It is true many will never forget.
Alas there are those who never really knew what happened.
Many gave their lives to protect millions more.
The only hope they had was for a better world in the future.
some fought bravely while others nursed the sick.
They all gave something to aid this world.
We see more heroes everyday yet we still forget.
We forget the ones that first gave their lives.
They gave of their own free will.
They gave so we could live and flourish.
Now we must remember everything they did for us.
We must never let the generations forget.
We all exist because of them.
May we never forget everything they gave up!

1. Heroic deeds

Heroic Deeds and Dirty Feet
- a traditional ballad

His name was called with no fanfare
As he arrived on shore,
Equipped with nought but rags to wear
He heard about the war.

With open mouth he listened to
The tales he heard around,
While feeling more than slightly new
And making not a sound.

Before too many marcs had passed,
He learned about the rats,
How they were multiplying fast
Due to a dearth of cats.

So off he trotted, down the hole,
Though ghastly was the stench,
To make some plat was this man’s goal
For ale, maybe a wench.

He stabbed and jabbed and weaved and heaved
Until he’d killed a few
Then back to light he climbed, relieved
With rats and jellies too.

Looking to trade he was soon told
That Kodi was the best,
That she would give more plat and gold
Than any of the rest.

With plat to burn he bought with joy
Some boots, and food to eat
He had no need of further toy
If he could have clean feet.

At last he came across the inn,
And bought his mug of ale,
While looking for the wench for him
He overheard a tale.

It talked of death, it is no joke,
Of glory and of pride
It mentioned many famous folk
And all the ways they died.

The patrons hushed, their eyes were wide
All listening with awe,
Nobody watched as our man sighed
And slipped back out the door.

Without his ale and with no wench
He counted up his plat,
Then made his way back to the trench
To kill another rat.

At long last when he’d made enough
He off to market went,
Without regret or huff and puff
Soon all his plat was spent.

He stood and watched the new arrive
All tattered, with no loot
He vowed they’d stay clean AND alive
As he gave them food and boots.

For heroes such as this, unsung,
This ballad is unfurled,
For those who help mentor the young
Do most to aid the world.

2. Love

Purest Love
- a sonnet (Shakespearean.)

That day he first lay in my arms does shine
Within the darkest recess of my dreams.
His skin was soft as silkspun, eyes as fine
As any gem that on a royal gleams.
In one swift marc I pledged myself to him,
A promise that endures the test of years
And always will, until the world grows dim,
When I will sleep with no regretful tears.
I love as purely as a woman can,
My heart fulfilled by his imperfect soul.
Though I will not see him become a man
From his life blossoms mine, thus I am whole.
Each night I pray to all the gods above;
Whatever else my son does, let him love.

3. Summer

Rubaiyat of Summer

The apples ripen in the light
Before Sunrifter sets at night,
Fresh sun-kissed orbs of perfect hue
With rose pink blush on skin so bright.

In orchards pearled with morning dew
Hang these sweet fruits, a precious few
To pluck beneath the silver moon
That trees may bloom again anew.

The Fall will be upon them soon,
Piled high in a cool storage room,
Perhaps will into cider turn -
Let spicy warmth suffuse the gloom.

Thus nature does the pattern learn
Of how she always death will spurn,
Though apples rot, in Winter’s might;
The golden Summer will return.

Topic: Heroes

A hero may not always be fair of face
Grunting often, coughing and dare I say alot of times they smell
Frolicking , chuckling , caring not for social grace
Concern for others is the biggest item in their arsenal
Drifting among the masses touching us in someway
Sharing a smile, or a hug, or ask how was your day?
Unceasing and weary they move from place to place
Running unconcerned to danger, caring only to evil erase

Often when they are done , they do not stand and take delight in praise
After risking mortal danger to keep us safe they often walk away
Unheralded , forgotten are their courage and kindnesses .
Taken for granted often they are for all they know is to give.
To them it often seems just the way they live
I think of great deeds often never recorded
Heros often never understand how much they are appreciated

They give heart to those by the example they lead
They inspire us by their great deeds
Yet my heroes are ones that are always there
To hear a tale of woe when one befalls and still share a tear
To sit and listen to their tales of adventure
Often leaves me enchanted and inside my heart fills with laughter
I praise my heroes for they are my friends
I am truly thankful, to each and every one of them

I praise my heroes , people who are always caring
I praise my heroes, people that are always giving
I praise my heroes, people that help out when clouds grow dark
I praise my heroes, people that will come to your aid whatever the marc
I praise my heroes, people that inspire and give by words and deeds
I praise my heroes, people that help others whenever they are in need
I praise my heroes, for they seek out and assist others new come to Valorn
I praise my heroes, I think by now you will know I speak of mentors!

Topic :Summer in Valorn

Any day one awakens in Valorn is fun
Summer is special here for everyone
Grab a lance ,come spear a fish with me in the sea south of Dundee
Grab some vines, lets go make a swing under the canopy
Lets sit on the balcony near the castle and watch the stars shine at night
With luck we might see the Queen, and have our souls radiated by her light

Journey with me to an oasis across the summer sand
Read a tome with me in Ryndall, perhaps learn to be a magician
Come collect ice crystals with me
Then drop them in cups to make some ice cold tree moss tea
Summer breezes blowing my hair free as I fly across the sky
Shooting out of a cannon laughing at all the sights before my eye

Sail upon a ferry ,perhaps to find pirate booty
Wear a viper helm looking for crystals till you’re sweaty
Unlock a treasure box, find a long lost prize
Perhaps one that shines and dazzles your eyes
Pick up shells and make a necklace you can sell
But let them stay in the sun a bit or like a fish you will smell

Walk among the flowers let their beauty captivate you
Visit the temple in Branishor and learn from clerics the meaning of virtue
Haggle at the markets, and sell all the loot you find
Almost anyone you meet ,I bet you will be kind
Drink some ale for the trip to the Rock City is long
Hopefully today the people of rock will open their doors

In case you find disappointment that way
Don’t fret it is close to where the Iron Knights stay
Visit their fortress and see honor made life
Summer is a time of training for these ever vigilant Knights
Run through Verthage as fast as you can
Cause bears and wolves love to chase you and watch out for a Guardian

In case you manage to make it across the bridge
I advise you if it gets dark run away if you wish to live
Make your way south to the town that far
Visit the forge and see people making chaos into order
Perhaps you will find your way in the grass
Lie low , bandits will get you if they get a chance

Outlined in this all through the running , jumping and fighting
Lurks a fun filled summer just yours for the asking
Just remember that there are many things to do and places to see
It will be even more special if you do these things with company
Its not the destination, but the journey that is fun
I say thank the Gods that summer has come !

I'm late . . and cannot be there to read for the ROK event . . but hope I can add this just the same. *smiles* The topic is Love, of course . . .

A smile that pauses, lingers,
An arrow that pierces through,
Palms pressed with gentled fire,
A burst of mingled hue.

It is light that springs from nothingness,
And grows to everything
It’s knots that slowly tangle
In gentled tethering.

It’s purposeful and poignant prose
That quilts your every thought
It’s backing down and giving ground
Compromises wrought.

It’s narrowness and openness, solemnity and joy,
Purity, hilarity and promises that cloy.
Innocence and quietness and sometimes without gloss,
Luxuriance and latitude and lassitude and loss . .
