can scrolls that are obtained during the challenge, then taken to the machine, be sold on the market as a normal player would do?

Question:

Alf has a crystalline shard from before the challenge that cannot be used after the challenge.

Can he complete the quest and then store the item until the conclusion of the challenge?

Likewise,

There is a possibility of receiving another shard from another player. Can the same be done: receive the shard, complete the quest, store the item until challenge is concluded?

Alf would not receive any benefit from the items during the challenge, thus upholding the spirit of the law.
