Fall Festival inventions

Postby Urkki » Sun Oct 21, 2012 2:24 pm

Fall Festival is supposed to be fun time and not work at all. We'd like to know how you could make Fall Festival time less stressful, with less work?

For example, korunga peeling is hard, there should be a korunga peeling machine!
What about those candyballs, so easy to drop on the floor...A candyball cleaner is needed!

What we actually want you to do?
Invent something that helps with Fall Festival. Give us simple enough instructions to build it. Remember to use only materials and techniques available in Valorn.

Name of the invention:
How to make it:
Why it is helpful:
The invention must be original, you may include pictures or diagrams, but it is not required.

Prizes: (winners pick)
A treasure box
Blank amulet
Scorpion dagger
Colorfully dyed silk bracelet
(more to be added)

One entry per character.
Remember to add your character's name and char id to the post.
The contest will end next saturday when I feel like it.

Name of the invention: Picture Patterns

Pumpkin carving/holiday banner painting isn't easy for everyone. Sometimes the art just doesn't come out as well as we hoped. Here I present various shapes of pre-designed, reusable Picture Patterns. They are made of stiff double-sided parchment paper for ease of designing faces on pumpkins for carving or painting - and for banners, signs and other festive artworks.

How to make it:
Glue together two pieces of stiff parchment papers and cut to a desired size for each Picture Pattern
Draw the desired festive designs (eyes, mouths, noses, leaves, candy, skulls, flowers, ghosts, spiders, monsters, fruit, birds, etc.)
Carefully cut the pattern shapes out with a sharp knife
Hold/affix to the desired surface and then paint on the designs

Why it is helpful: As we are not all artists I think it is helpful to have a supply of these Picture Patterns available so everyone can have fun painting and decorating whatever it is they want to decorate in the spirit of this festive season of the year.

Name of the invention: Treat Safety Machine (of pain)
How to make it: Tie string together and at the end tie a hammer. Hang this over a branch (The tree in the plains works well) and balance the hammer carefully on a more distant branch.
Why it is helpful: If you eat a treat and accidentally start to choke on the goodies within, yank the string to swing the hammer towards you. Have the string at the right length to make it hit your stomach, which helps to dislodge the foreign object from your body. Also, it will hurt you a lot.

Name of the invention: The Ale Savior
How to make it: Using either a glass jar or another mug, cut a piece of one of your old shirts, and tie it across the mouth of the receptacle using string. For best results don't stretch it too tight. Pour the fouled ale through and strain out the bits, pull off the cloth, and it's ready to drink!
Why it is helpful: We've all run out to a raid, mug in hand, through deepest wilderness to beat a beast to death for the good of Valorn. But after, when we looked in our mug, what do we find? Bits of leaf, bark, teeth, claws, and beast! Nothing that can't be fixed by the Ale Savior though. Turn that crunchy ale back into the smooth brew it's meant to be!

Name of the Invention - Korunga Deflector

How to make it - Cut the flaps off four eelskin pouches, leaving just the body of the pouch, and attach them to a belt made of bos leather. Find four fairly straight branches in the forest, and insert them into the pouches pointing upward. The branches should be long enough to reach above your head or helm. Make a wooden frame about six feet square, and attach one of your uprights to each corner. For added stability, make a shoulder harness to which are attached four loops, and feed the uprights through these loops.
Attach strips of bos leather across the frame. making an an open mesh. The result should be fairly firm but with some elasticity. Anything falling onto the mesh would cause slight stretching of the leather, which would then return to its usual length - also the branches would bend slightly before springing back to their original shape.

Why it is helpful - It's wonderful to see the Great Korunga bouncing around the lands during Fall Festival. However, some unfortunate individuals have been accidentally squished by him when his progress has led to him landing on them. If you are wearing the Korunga Deflector and standing where he lands, then instead of squishing you the Great Korunga will land on the deflector which will absorb the impact, and then spring him back into the air, propelling him safely on his way.

Name of the invention: Healing Reminder

How to make it:
1) Find a bit of string
2) Tie string around finger to remind yourself to heal
3) Try to remember why the string is tied there

Why it is helpful:
We all know (Or should) that in the heat of battle one may forget to heal after leaving the scene of a difficult skirmish. We go on to the next beastie or Demon and jump right into the thick of things sans HP and earn ourselves a free trip to the LM. This device, when used properly may (or may not) prevent this from happening.

Good Treat Detector

During fall festival folks go looking around for fall festival treats and biting into them. Some have rather... frightful things inside them. In order to avoid have the worst happen this wonderful invention comprised of a small hammer, magnifying glass, and long slender pin will help make sure your fall festival treat is not something you'd rather discard.

They are all connected by a very helpful handle and rotate on a set of gears. First, you used the magnifying glass to closely examine the treat.
You turn the handle once, the gears click and move and the pin is presented next for your treat examination. Using the pin you can carefully probe the treat to see if it contains something petrified or otherwise yucky.
One more turn and the hammer presents itself for your use. You can use this to lightly tap the treat to see if it contains glass or other dangerous objects.

Once you have used the detector you can safely ingest the treat.

Hopefully.

Korungarang Oil
(properties discovered by being used first on a korunga fruit dropped by the Great Korunga)

This oil is made from select plant flowers, ground dull crystals, and sea turtle shells processed for their oil.
The items are combined and then warmed until the oil is thick. Once cooled it is then rubbed into a korunga fruit at any stage of ripeness or over ripeness; taking several coats with drying between, until the fruit reaches the texture and hardness of a fine wood. Some shaping can be done half way through the drying process to flatten the fruit and make it easier to handle.

The result is a Korungarang, a weapon that is created once the fruit is completely hardened, and perfect for taking down fleeing Banditos. it is flung, and spins through the air, returning to its owner. This flinging action was said to have been observed being done by monkeys and the occasional drunk pirate, the fruit flying back at them (sometimes to the detriment of the flinger.)

Perfectly ripe fruit make the strongest and most durable weapons. Over ripe fruit also make a weapon, but they do not do as much damage. The Over Ripe Korungarang have been known, however, to break on impact releasing a horrendous stink, which stuns and damages the target much like a sandclaw burster.

Once a korunga is turned into a weapon it remains such and just needs maintenance, like any other weapon, to keep it in tip top condition.

The Urkki Ale fetcher

A wooden rail affixed to the table leads straight to the counter at Jeffrey's, so that once someone places a coin on the counter Jeffrey can slide an ale straight to Urkki to consume.
Order Adjutant Viviyana raises her hands to receive the Blessing of Zanaan's Presence , "Oh, thank you."

And the winners are...

Pallas and his potentially life saving Korunga Deflector
and
Kaballoi and her Korungarang Oil which may yet solve some crisis on the beaches of Kilican.

If you two could pm me with two choices I shall see that you get one of those things!

Again thank you everyone for participating and congratulations to Pallas and Kaballoi!
