Anti-Spam Software

Postby Cory » Sun Jul 23, 2006 8:59 am

I've made a mod to the forums which will be blocking what it believes are spam bots. This may deny access to some people. If I get reports of this I may turn on additional checks to prevent it, if I don't then I'll leave it as is.

DG forums get few spam bots compared to many places, but we still get a few. This should drop it to near 0. Its designed to fight blog comment spam, but I've hacked it together with the forums.

Entertainingly enough, right after I posted this a spambot decided that it was the perfect time to post...

I've implemented a stricter spam checker which would have caught this person. (on the positive side, I have an IP to test this stuff with now) If you get a 403 access denied error stating that your IP is blacklisted due to being a known spam IP, you may be out of luck. If I see too many false positives I'll revert the system, but right now every forum access is checked against the spamcop and spamhaus real time black lists. By the time a spam bot activates their registration, they should be on these lists.

If you're listed on one of these lists, you'll need to follow the instructions on the website for the particular list before you can post again. I do not control the lists or have input on who to remove.
