The Battle System

Postby Ben » Sat May 29, 2004 9:15 am

We are changing the battle system. The first phase SHOULD BE DONE, as long as there are no bugs with it.

This allows us:
1) To be more like a turn based fighting RPG... well, actually now we are a turn based fighting RPG. This makes it so people can try to run away mid-fight AND pick when they use their special attacks.
2) To get rid of the silly XP scale where you needed to kill like 20 guys to get a % at higher levels.
3) To allow group hunting and sharing of XP.

There are a few simple options: FIGHT, RETREAT, and QUICK FIGHT. We will be adding in other options as we make sure there are no bugs.

--------
A battle:

When you enter a fight now, you are presented with three options: FIGHT, RETREAT, or QUICK FIGHT. If you are a profession at this point, you can use your staff or ring or whatever. Please note you can only use your item once per fight.

If you hit RETREAT, you will leave the fight screaming just like before. If you hit FIGHT or USE an item, you enter the battle. Once you are in battle mode, you cannot be healed or recharged.

After you hit ATTACK, it shows who damages who for how much, and if anybody died. Then it will give you ATTACK and RETREAT options again. Eventually, in the next phase, there will be selections for your special move, as well as special mid-battle spells and prayers and other things. (EVENTUALLY, thats like Phase II. ;)) Please note that there are NO special attacks in the game right now, so please don't report this as a bug.

If you try to retreat after you have attacked at least once, there is a roll to see if you succeed in getting away. If you do get away, you retreat like normal. If you don't, the monster gets a whack in on you, and you are still in battle (failing to escape).

The QUICK FIGHT option lets you quickly mow down lesser enemies without having to go through each round. QUICK FIGHT simulates all rounds. This can be used to travel long distances more easily, as well as to get money and loot more quickly. When you are using quick fight, you do NOT gain ANY XP.

Potions are not useable in combat, and neither are cleric heals or enchanter recharges. If you can somehow do any of these things, post in the bugs forum.
