I wrote this some time ago, and Steelthunder liked it enough to suggest a collaborative effort putting it to music. Despite a shudder at the thought of Trinald hearing my singing, it was agreed - though this hasn't yet come to fruition. I thought I may as well post it, with a slight revision now that we have a new monarch.
Valornian Lullaby
Close your eyes and dream in peace,
Son of mine shall softly sleep.
Fret not on what toils may come;
In distant future, troubles keep.
The world is held so safe for you,
The evil creatures valiantly curbed.
Our initiates strive to guard our homes
So babies’ peace is not disturbed.
Enchanters flit from post to post
With magic powdered ease to stray,
And so the furthest points are safe,
Through moonlit night and sunny day.
Rogues their paths do softly tread,
Those eyes and ears of our defence;
Stealthy foes to wandered demons,
Clearing shadows, dark and dense.
Close your eyes and dream in peace,
Son of mine shall softly sleep.
Fret not on what toils may come;
In distant future, troubles keep.
Whatever ill befalls you, child,
Seek a cleric; their ring if bleeding,
Their touch if hurt and losing strength,
Their faith if ever solace needing.
Warriors bold protect us all,
Led by the Iron Knights so brave.
Their valour without known parallel;
Trinald more than once to save.
So hush, my baby, have no fear,
Your future is held in steadfast hands.
While you dream through tranquil night,
Cordelia's subjects shield the lands.
Close your eyes and dream in peace,
Son of mine shall softly sleep.
Fret not on what toils may come;
In distant future, troubles keep.
Close your eyes…
