Valornian Slang

Postby Ben » Mon Oct 11, 2004 4:16 pm

Mortals, it is time to develop a system of slang for the world of Valorn. Beneath this post, you shall post your WORDS or PHRASES, and then a description of both 1. what it means and 2. proper ways of using it.

I will be the judge of what is appropriate or what fits and what doesn't. If an idea does not seem to fit or be appropriate, I will delete the post. I look forward to your input! Hopefully, this will help all you mortals express yourselves without the need to resort to god-world slang. Cool?

Example: I saw somebody say "Hell's Teeth!" today, which is good roleplaying slang... but doesn't really fit in the world we have here, since there is no concept of "hell". How about something like "Demon Lord's Teeth!". Then you would post how it is used and what it means, and then give an example phrase or two of somebody using it properly. Easy and fun, eh?

By Eldrin's Chin! = Surprise, unexpected event
The Dark Lord take you! = condemning, implying worthlessness
Don't pull a Stayl on me = tricky, outrageous
Slippery as a greased Rogue! = treacherous ground, untrustworthy actions
Sharp as an Altitan's Hammer = implying dullwittedness, stupid
The Black Lord's own *word*! = evil, uncompromising
As a Sea Dweller to water = familiarity, closeness
The Black Lord's hiss! = marked, comdemned
Dremin: "It's about dremin time!"
Terled: "Well, now we're terled." -terled, terl, terling-

~More to come~

-edit- Sorry, used Stayl in the wrong context, and Dremin and Terl aren't part of Valorn, but you used the example of Farscape, so I made up a couple of words.
-edit2- Changed Beard to Chin

Yes, see, that would all work... although I don't remember any dremins, terls, or stayl in the game... did somebody put something new in that I don't know about? If not, I guess those don't make any sense. ;)

Anyways, I'm not going to regulate this after all. Use this thread to come up with ideas, and then you guys can implement them as you see fit. You are the culture of Valorn after all... so whatever catches on catches on!

Thorin the Dainty.

As it says to the left......I talk WAY too much. ;)
And yes, I am fully aware that currently it says so to the right, rather than the left, which used to be the location for said line, but I am simply too lazy to change it for you.

Darker then Balthazars Britches-to describe a very dark place- 'that hallway was darker then Balthazars Britches'

By the gates of N'Rolav-to describe a reckless or dangerous endeavor- 'By the gates of N'Rolav, what do you think your doing!?'

-more in general slang-

Curses, hexes and damnation- a way to express ones displeasure, without being overly profane-'Curses, hexes and damnation, not again!'

Fire, bones and brimstone- describes a wish for something or someone to burn to ashes on the spot-'argh, fire, bones and brimstone, just be gone with yee'

By the Frostbitten beard of Gunther the Great-invoke the wrath of a thousand ice fleas upon your target..or just a non descript curse to express displeasure- 'By the Frostbitten beard of Gunther the Great get out of my sight!'

-more to follow-

i like the N'rolav one...

as far as the north room...you could also say "you're in the north room on that one" which would be the same as 'way out in left field'

"What in the name of Balthy's buttocks?" - Surprise, has been used before ;)

"As strange as a laughing headless hen." - Abnormal or just plain odd.
"Ixon collects pretty much for the joy of collecting. He's fairly straight up for a scoundrel, double dealing, profiteering rogue. ;)" - Hacken

By the gods!

Two uses;

1) General announcement as to something going wrong:

"By the gods! That's the second time that bandit has gotten me!"

2) As a general threat:

"By the gods, you'll pay for this"

On/by the ashes of _____

used as a solemn oath or a phrase expressing a strong feeling of some sort. Usually sworn on the ashes of something that Balthazar razed that was near/dear to you, so it could be:

"I swear my loyalty on the ashes of Kimald"
"By the ashes of Ryndall, Ive never seen anything like that!"

blimmin' = replaces a type of F-bomb; "Those blimmin' Landrays are handin' me my blimmin' helmet!!"

Son of an Ebon Wolf = derrogatory, mean, like "the B-word"; "That Blathazar was born the Son of an Ebon Wolf."

duggard = idiot, stupid person; "Dagobert is a duggard!" : -ly = idiotic, like a stupid person; "Many conversations of late in the Dundee Inn sound duggardly."

Ok, I have rather some swearing, insults, curses.

"By Ben/Cory/Selene" (enter God of choice) =
compare it to "By Jove", By Cory I didn't see that one coming.

"I'll pray you'll get smiten by ...(enter God of Choice)"=
Condamning, cursing, wishes bad things would happen to that person.

"May the Demon Lord eat your soul"=
Same as above

"I'll pray you BLEED to dead!"
Same as above

"You're as smelly as Duberry's swamp."=
Insult

"Son of Balthazar!"=S0B (yes, that figures)
or"Isn't Balthazar your mother?"= Very grave insult

"I don't give a plat!" = Compare to "I don't give a S...."

"Get lost in the Maze!!" = when someone annoys you and you want to get rid of him.

That's it for now. Maybe I'll think of more later.

I'll skin you like a wolf/enraged bear/snow leopard etc = when someone annoys you

Demon spawn! = general insult along lines of SOB

As rusty as a saw-arm = someone who lacks skill

unbearded = lack of skill (particular to enchanters)

Shadowwolf's fate = death in a sudden ambush

"Well, I'll be Lord Bobo's uncle..." - equilavent to "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle"

"As oft as I fell asleep in the Dundee inn."= very often. For example "I tried to find that tomb key as oft as I fell asleep in the Dundee inn. And finally I was able to claim my trophee."

"Bags!" - shoot, shucks, damn, rats, s**t, etc... - like when you're killed and are plopped on the floor. "Bags! Those jelly's are nasty."

"For the love of Ben/Cory" - this one needs no explination.

"You're full of sewer filth!" -

"May every attack cause you to bleed"

"May you be trapped in an empty jar forever!"

Just a few....more to come.

How about

"Son of a Mire Hag"
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. "

Mylor and I had this conversation some months ago:

"Benspit!" = with the same convenient initials of BS, signifying something that one believes is not true e.g. "Sir, that statement is pure Benspit!" or something that is badly-made or defective, as in "This battle hammer is a piece of Benspit".
For greater emphasis, extend the oath e.g. "By the Dribbling Saliva of Ben!"

I often simply swear "By the Light" or "In the name of the Light." Short, sweet and to the point.

Of course, Valornian (?) is not Venus's first language, so after having been told off for using "Damn!" (which I still think is kind of OTT) when I land on the floor of the inn I often swaer "K'znch'ai!", which at least has enough guttural sounds to be a good swear word. Anyone with creative interpretations as to what this may mean can PM me with them
