'Twas just past dark, midsummer's eve,
Indoors went Dundee's folk
Fresh-scrubbed hands and rolled up sleeve
A short pre-mealtime smoke...
Yet to the north, the darkness boiled
Eyes agleam 'twixt Forest boles
Demon hordes their weapons oiled
Then raced southward, out their holes.
Into the town, the terror spread
Straight through to Trainer's spot
Stomped through market to registrar's bed
Demon breath stank foul and hot...
Unbeknownst to Balthazar spawn
Followed a warrior new -
Elspeth Inell to Dundee drawn
Demon's bane, 'tis true.
'Pon her descent, she found the first
Nigh the northern gate
Her weapon (Solis), with blood-rage thirst
Ripped round with all her weight
Still, the spawn parried, ducking low
As shield to shield they met
Human and demon, toe to toe
'Twas a battle not o'er yet!
Eyebrows rose as blonde tresses flailed
And sword missed demonkin
'Twas simple enow - then why had she failed
To pierce enemy's skin?
Grey eyes narrowed as foe she gauged
Both circling to find the track
Clash! Bang! Again the battle raged
Ere they parted, both stepping back.
'Twas true enough - these lesser foes
Evaded all her tries
Yet still Dundee was in its throes
Think! How cut them down to size?
... Faint memory of similar bouts
Leapt blazing to her thoughts
In desperation calling out
"Bring initiates! Bring lots!"
She dashed from one sign to the next
Marking where each demon lay
Her cry the guidance and the text
Marshalling defense' play.
A few folk answered to her call
First one, and then two, then three ...
'Til finally the demons' sprawl
Showed town was once more free.
Her eyes glowed bright as each she praised
A word, a salve, a draught
For their efforts brave she raised
An Inn-side toast and laughed.
'Twas good indeed, thought warrior lass,
To know that such as these
Were arising from dear Valorn's grass
To serve, protect, and please.
'Ware now, Balthazar, most foul!
On our guard we stand!
Hordelings you may send forth to prowl
'Tween high mount, desert, and strand
From shore to shore we fight as one
Each giving of their all -
The battle is but now begun
And we few the ShieldWall!
