How Deer Lost His Antlers

This was told in Cerbies after Sarah Nighthawk told some riddles and Urkki left. He figures in the story in a cameo.

 
As you know some animals keep their horns all year round, others drop them. However, according to legend this was not always the case. Once, all horned animals kept them, all the time, and Deer had the most magnificent set of antlers ever seen. And this is how he lost them.

Deer was happy with his antlers, and he bragged about them to all other animals. He even mocked Bear and Wolf for not having any. Being tender sorts, both were highly embarrassed and later incensed. They and some other animals got together to talk about what to do about Deer and his arrogant ways.

‘Mountain goat can help’ one offered.

The others nodded and expressed their agreement through howls, shrieks and other such animal noises. For although animals could talk in those days, they were still animals. Now you may wonder when that stopped, and that’s a story for another day.

The animals sent a delegation to mountain goat, though he lived far and high away. They got there eventually, after a long arduous journey that would be another tale in itself.

Mountain goat wasn’t happy being disturbed. He lived so far away for a reason you see.

But he listened, and finally told the animals ‘tell Deer he is being foolish. All have something to be prideful of. Choosing one thing over all the others will only lead to trouble.â€
