Folly: Episode 1

Postby Blythe » Fri Feb 15, 2019 8:55 pm

Raffe walks up the sign post in Dundee Town Square and neatly tacks the four corners of a parchment for all to see.
Fellow Adventurers!
Some of you may have heard of the game called “Folly”; some of you may not have. I would like to get together a group of six or more folks to play a round with me. I am including a space below for you to sign up, so that we may keep in contact during the course of the game.
For this first game, I will be the proposed Narrator. You can send any messengers to Strifegorge Fortress for me to receive with haste.
I am also including a set of rules for game play. I would like everyone that is interested in playing to meet in the Dundee Inn on the next turn ((Saturday Feb 16 @ 0800 central time)). If you are unable to meet up, please do not fret! Folly is a game that we can play without all having to wake and be in the Inn at the same time.
Please continue to watch this notice board for game related information!
Thank you,
Rx

Next to the notice is another parchment titled: Rules for “Folly: Demons and Denizens”; a storied game.

As Sunrifter rises over the Kingdom of Fol, the Vicegerent emerges from his home at the top of a hill to proudly proclaim across the land, "I am Vicegerent. On this turn glorious turn, I name King Falx Monde 'the Dreamer' as ruler of Fol. May his Folishness be blessed by the gods! Rule well, King Dreamer and bring justice to the land."
The wise Vicegerent, Raffe Rychmin, goes back into his home. Truly wanting nothing to do with the Folishness that the turn may hold until the next Riftershine.

Bif signs his name upon the board -

Bifrost Janger. Enchanter. Humanoidologist. Scamp.

As Riftershine began and King Falx the Dreamer lay slumbering in his abode of safety, the denizens of Fol gathered at their favorite Inn.
A lively discussion was had over refreshments. It seemed that every denizen had reason to believe their neighbors may be the demons hidden in their midst.
Was suspicion itself a demonic trait?
Did a demon wear black, or scaly armor?
Who in their right mind would attempt to eat stodgy fruitcake crumbs, if not a demon?
Did demons perfect their nails for their evil gallivanting during Demon Eyes?

Narrowed eyes and questioning glances were thrown across tables and into the darkening corners of the Inn. The denizens Topaz, Pallas, Cody, Lavender, and Telmacha had much to observe. Many questions were asked, yet nothing was revealed in the beginning marcs of Riftershine all while they awaited the rise of their Dreaming King.

King Falx arose from his abode and looked on over the kingdom that was his to rule under the Riftershine. With a booming voice he proclaimed:
"Let your concerns be heard, denizens of Fol, for my dreams have shown me a face. I would hear counsel to decide if it was a premonition of banishment from our fair kingdom"

Narrator wrote:While King Falx Monde the Dreamer called for counsel, the denizens gathered in small groups off and on in the Inns during the Riftershine.
Did they suspect their very own King of the turn for being a demon?
What was the reason that suspicions were being so closely guarded?
Perhaps the Vicegerent was as Folish as the rest in his naming of Ruler. How he could tell demon from denizen, after all?
As the marcs of Riftershine grew in number, all but the demons fretted the setting of Sunrifter and rise of the Demon Eyes that would always occur following the call for a vote.

Bif; a common, tawny land-human, was the first of the denizens to stray away from the throng to address the ruler.

"Dreaming King!" called out the lad, as he found his place humbly upon his knees, "Though I have no news of the others, I come forth to profess my great innocence. I am a mere farm lad; not a wicked, demonic trickster."

Bif remained there upon his knees after speaking; his head respectfully bowed. The top of his curly ginger hair glinted beneath the 'Rifter; though perhaps his downturned face hid his deceptive face from view; that would be for King Falx to decide...

*Cody wanders up, still gnawing on his piece of fruitcake and points to Bif* Seems to me, only a demon would feel the need to declare they are not a demon...quite suspicious I think, Dreaming King

Very strange. Once a certain state of mind takes over one's thinking then any action -or lack thereof - seems cause for suspicion. What people do or say. What they wear, or eat. The marc when they rest or wake becomes possibly significant.
Or even the action of our Folish King perhaps? Too lost in dreams to banish anyone, maybe. And that too has consequences. It will impoverish three of the citizens, which in itself could be seen as an inhuman act. Just a passing thought ...
*eyes the King of Dreams in a speculative manner for a few moments before returning to his contemplation of the matter at hand*

nods with Cody"You could be right, or he could just be foolish." gasps as a thought comes to her "And you Cody could just be trying to use him as a distraction to do your own nefarious deeds in the moonlight..."

Topaz bows politely to the Dreaming King.

"There is something to be said," she says, "for the theory that only a demon would feel the need to declare his or her innocence. On the other hand, there is also something to be said for the theory that a demon would accuse others in order to divert attention elsewhere. I am not sure which of these theories I believe, so it is just as well that the final decision belongs to the King."
