I concur with Hentez. Your killing of the creature doesn't update the database for your friend's character to acknowledge he/she is no longer in battle with a creature. Only his or her refresh will generate some sort of acknowledgement that the creature is dead and he/she can now be healed.

Kalea: The extra 5 on all existing characters would have been a result of a MySQL query adding 5 to that entry in the characters tables, a one shot deal.

This would have had no effect on new characters made, as they're created from established scripts which would set the base stats already.
