Each adventurer may only start combat for themselves. If you use a dagger, you will begin a fight with any fight-able monsters in the area. Other people are unaffected.

Just an update on the using other people's dagger front: If you're standing there trying to use another person's dagger, or trying to use one from your pack, and there's monsters around then combat will begin.
