NOTE: Forgive my tardiness in posting my second quest...much has happened in Valorn since scribing my report. *bows with respect then slips into the shadows*

The Healing Thistle
(Kaballoi's second quest for the Order of the Winter Knight)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
** Again Kaballoi can be found with quill in hand, ink at her elbow, and a piece of parchment under her palm seated at Cerbie's deep into the night. A worn leather bound journal lays open at her other elbow. She glances at it periodically. It is quiet, with hardly an adventurer entering or staying in the Grill. It is only a faint scratching that can be heard. The only movement the gentle bobbing of a crooked quill fluff as her hand moves across the page. This is the recounting of her second candidacy quest for the Winter Knight.**
Excerpts from Kaballoi's traveling Journal...
**entry 1**
I am glad that my quills and ink are light and take hardly any room in my pack. This journal has come in handy. Without it I might not recall where I have been or the adventures I have been on. It is sometimes hard to re-read my entries as I am often writing on the move and in places that do not usually engender reflection or repose. I also realize that the facts of my recounting might be muddled, as it often can take me time to set my memories to parchment in a timely manner.
...I was out in the Bromidic Fields east of Milltown when I was called to the temple to hear of the next step in my journey to becoming a member in the Order of the Winter Knight. I had been training and was only 7% away from reaching my 15th level of advancement when I was contacted to come to the Holy Temple of Light again and meet with Sarducci.
...it was sad to have to leave that lovely steak, which I had been roasting quite nicely over my flaming broadsword, out in the field when I abandoned my camp. It was a lucky thing because the bos had been gathering in large herds I could not hope to defeat.
** entry 2 **
I must snatch a moment here in the lady's lavatory to write my reflections of our meeting at the holy temple. I must remember next time not to drink so much ale before a meeting as they seem to take some time and my bladder has a mind of its own.
...Again Lord Sarducci, Glorina, BlueMist and Ruby Falcon were awaiting me. The others, so new to me, I do not recall at the moment. Eventually I shall remember their names.
...Prayers were commenced and we all honored the Gods in their house of worship. Incense was lit...which made my nose twitch...but I was able to hold off sneezing and not embarrassing myself or spoil the moment. Candles were handed around and we knelt in prayer before Xia and the other Gods.
...I was asked if my uncertainty still remained at becoming a follower of the order. I was able to say emphatically NO. I had no uncertainty left. My faith has been strengthened. My resolved tempered. The gift of understand I have gained from the first quest has brought a light into my heart and has given me a faith I had not expected. Pleased with my answer Lord Sarducci and Glorina told me of my next task which is to seek Enlightenment of my Spirit. I am to find a thistle with extraordinary healing properties... there is someone gravely injured in the realm and they can only be healed by the use of this plant. We are to travel into the Western Mountains seeking a holy man who has a scroll with the location of this plant. I am eager to begin.
...I must make haste...as we are preparing to leave...but I will say that again I had to recount what I had learned. I am not always certain I grasp what Lord Sarducci is asking of me, but I did answer as honestly as possible. I was a bit perplexed at the reactions some of my recounting caused...I meant no offense to the gods or to Lord Sarducci. Glorina scolded me in a whisper...but I still do not see what I was saying that caused such a reaction of mirth. I must ask about Oren Vaultbreaker and why my learning the nuts and bolts of professions was so amusing. He is quite a fine and staunch fellow...very no-nonsense in my experience to date. I will have to find out.
...Chade Fallstar slipped into the back of the room midway through our meeting. I was astonished and amazed that he chose to come. I had only recently discovered that he was a Winter Knight fellow, but he had said himself that he had been away a long time. I was pleased to see such a happy greeting between he and Lord Sarducci. It made my decision to apprentice with him all that much easier.
...I am concerned for Ruby Falcon. I am a newcomer to Valorn and its peoples. She was very distressed at seeing Chade and looked accusingly at me as if I had the power to invite such a personage as he. There seems to have been some sort of falling out there. I hope she will be alright. It is not my place, nor my business, to know what has happened between them. But I will pray for her...that she be at peace in her heart and that her conflict be resolved.
**entry 3**
I am glad that we have taken a moment for our preparations outside of Milltown Gate, as it gives me the chance to continue with my notes. We have begun our journey following the road leading into the endless desert. BlueMist and Glorina, who are assigned to guide and accompany me on this quest, paused making sure we were ready. BlueMist warned me about following in her exact footsteps as it is very dangerous in the mountains. Glorina seems to be busy with some type of preparation and is taking longer than expected.
...I am following BlueMist and we have come to where the road ascends into the mountains. I am told that Trust and Fellowship are extremely important as we travel. I am very tired. I have not had enough sleep. Her words however burned into my brain. They were important. I must write them here so I do not forget.
...Glorina has lagged behind again. BlueMist has gone to look for her, which gives me the opportunity to look at the Mountains. They are so tall and daunting and wreathed in clouds. I hear it is cold up higher and that there are fearsome creatures living on the mountain slopes. I am determined to succeed. I do not fear the death I might meet up higher. I just hope that we can retrieve the thistle and deliver it to the person who so desperately needs it in time.
...BlueMist and Glorina have arrived. Glorina apparently still suffers the lingering after effects from a grave wound inflicted by some Mutant Beast. She does not move as swiftly as she once was able. Honestly I had not noticed until this journey that she was recovering from such a wound. Glorina then blessed both BlueMist and I for the trip into the mountains.
**entry 4**
It was a fearsome fight getting up the mountain trail. We were attacked by Snow Leopards and Yeti. At first I was frozen in place by the ferocious and deadly attacks of the fearsome creatures...but I had made a promise to myself...to defend and assist my companions along this journey. I raised my sword and leaped into the fray alongside BlueMist, who I admire greatly for her skill and daring as a warrior. I nearly defeated several leopards on my own and now have two pelts in my pack along with one yeti hide BlueMist gave me. I so wish that I could wear one...it is so cold up here. When we had finally neared our destination we were attacked by a centaur. I am grateful that we meet several adventurers along the mountain path. Zerok I believe his name was, but I was deeply fatigued, and do not recall precisely. He lent his sword to ours and we were victorious against the man-horse.
...I am exhausted. We have finally reached the mountain sanctuary. It is bitterly cold and dark outside. I am standing by the fire doing my best to stay warm and awake. BlueMist and I, yet again, await for Glorina who has been delayed upon the path. The walls are covered with strange markings that I can not read. There are pelts of different animals hang from the walls. This is a sanctuary I realize to the animals of the mountains. I am honored and glad to be out of the cold and done with the fighting for the moment. I gave the holy man one of my seagull feathers to add to his altars. He seemed pleased. I hope he was. I thought that it would be good to have a bit of the ocean along with the mountains in his sanctuary.
...Glorina has finally arrived. The holy man was at first reluctant to to give us the scroll, but with Glorina's persuasion finally did. But much to BlueMists and Glorina's dismay they could not read it. Even I looked upon the scroll and saw that it was gibberish...unreadable. The holy man was told that we were seeking a healing thistle to save a persons life, but he was still reluctant to tell us any more about the scroll or the thistle. Finally Glorina made an impassioned plea in a language I did not understand. The holy man said that we would find the thistle when we had the scroll translated and gave it to another...a hermit in a hut in the grasslands. In a final attempt to see if we could translate the scroll, help was called for. Glorina sent out a calling for an enchanter of high skill and ability. After some time JKD the enchanter appeared before us. Upon looking at the scroll he confirmed that he could not translate the scroll and that it would need to be taken to one who could.
**entry 5**
I am most grateful to JKD. He opened a portal for us and I stepped through to a place I had never been. There was a life monument and all around me were grasses so tall they towered over my head. I did not move, as BlueMist suggested yet again. I have learned to trust her experience and sword in the matter of traversing the unknown areas of Valorn. Again I waited, which gave me the opportunity to record this entry. BlueMist came first appearing through the portal then striding through the grass. Glorina came second, but it was some time. I am beginning to believe that Patience is a virtue that also must be learned because if would seem that Clerics often go off into trances, I assume communing with the Gods, but I am not always certain. I hope it is not some malady that is contagious...will have to ask Lord Sarducci if I can remember about the healing of this troublesome condition.
...We have moved deeper into the grasses following a faint path. We have been attacked by vicious bandit attack dogs and even retreated from creatures called Grass Stalkers...they are ferociously huge and alien. A giant insect like beast. Luckily it was without too much effort we were able to find the correct path and make it to the city of Fartown.
... Finally we have made our way into Fartown. We walked through the gates and past the guard. I was never so grateful to be safe without the worry of ambush. There is so much to see and so much to remember. My mind is becoming dull with fatigue and I need to rest, but the fate of someone rests upon my shoulder. BlueMist suggested we wait while Glorina went to find the translator of the scroll as the Holy Man in the mountains had suggested. I explored the place a bit while she was gone visiting the blacksmith, the inn, the platform holding the big ancient cannon. I do not trust this mode of transportation. I do not like to see myself strewn in bits and pieces across the sky, nor the understanding that I could land anywhere, including into danger. But BlueMist seems to find it a quite adequate form of transportation, and for some strange reason fun.
...Glorina has finally returned. The scroll is readable now. My mind is so cloudy with fatigue that I can not even recall what it might have said, nor what Glorina's words to the matter were. All I know now is that we must make our way back into the grasslands. There was a grass hut that we passed. Apparently this is where the Hermit is who holds the sacred thistle. We are off again.
**entry 6**
We have made it to the grass hut. It was hard going as we were ambushed nearly the whole way there. I am a bit more awake now as the fighting was quite dramatic. My heart is still pounding from the excitement. BlueMist again showed her prows as a Warrior defeating many Grass Bandits and Guard Dogs. At one point we were trapped in a ring of the tall grass being menaced by a most vicious bandit. Glorina had gone into another trance unaware of what was happening around us. BlueMist and I defended her as best we could preventing her injury. I was not much help attacking the bandit as he was quite skilled. I was not able to touch him but I did bedevil him...holding him off with my flaming broadsword...singing his clothes and attempting to set him ablaze. BlueMist watched me with some amazement it seemed (at least I hope that was the expression on her face) helping her keep the villain away. I had to take care however, not to set the grasslands ablaze and roast ourselves as well as the bandits. BlueMist sent out a call for help...but it was Glorina who finally defeated the Bandit when she suddenly awakened from her trance.
...I have stowed a special necklace in my pack. The hermit gave me the necklace after I completed a test to receive the special thistle. Three times I had to spin with my eyes closed. Keeping eyes closed I had to step once to the west, once to the south and then once to the north. My fatigue had redoubled by this point, but I did not let that faze me. I was just glad I did not fall down. Once around I spun, stopping. I listened carefully to the sounds around me and the smells. I felt a breeze and the strong smell of grass coming from what I knew was the doorway we had entered by. I then spun two more times again reorienting myself when I stopped. Then carefully and quickly I stepped west, south, spun and stepped north. My mind becomes a bit foggy at this point. I was so relieved to have done the test correctly that Glroina and BlueMist had to prompt me to take the healing thistle. All I remember after that was taking the thistle and the necklace and the instructions that I had to wear the necklace while using the thistle or that the healing would not work. We were able to make our way to Fartown again gratefully without too much trouble.
**entry 7**
I have come to the conclusion that I do not much like cannons, nor riding in them. After surviving all the perils of the journey it is terribly undignified to find yourself fighting your way out of a sack at the life monument. I am sitting here grateful and relieved that the quest is over, but I could not live with myself if I did not recount what had happened.
...exhausted and stunned from landing at the Dundee Life Monument in a sack, I could not move for several minutes. After cutting my way out of the sack the first person I saw was John Bruzer. I greeted him, but he did not respond...seems he suffers from the same trances that Glorina does. As I regained my strength my mind was able to focus and I called on BlueMist and Glorina...both told me that they would be in Dundee shortly.
...exhaustion can make a fool of a person. When BlueMist and Glorina finally showed up, they asked me if I could move. I knew that haste was needed as someone gravely injured was to perish if I was unable to bring them the healing thistle.
...Finally I was able to move, albeit groggily. My mind numb, my body tired, I was suddenly chasing BlueMist and Glorina up and down the main road of Dundee following a trail of blood I just barely see or comprehended, as the ground was so trodden with footprints, mud, and muck. My head was spinning fiercely from all the searching round and round. Again I noticed John Bruzer standing by the side of the road. In a quiet voice he commented to me that the injured party needed the healing thistle. I thought that this was an odd thing for John to say, but I did not at the time realize what was going on. I continued racing pell-mell after BlueMist and Glorina frantically following the blood trail until I suddenly realized that John Bruzer had collapsed in the dirt. It was then that it dawned on me that John was the injured party.
...Frantically I pulled the thistle from my pack putting it into Johns hands. His injuries, however, were too sever and he was rapidly losing his life force. BlueMist and Glorina were urgently giving me advice I could barely take in, nor can remember now. Glorina was using her healing skills and blessings to keep John from the brink of death, when I suddenly realized why the thistle was not working. I had forgotten to wear the shell necklace given to me that allowed the healing to happen. I'm sure I must have been a sight. I was flinging armour and weapons and clothes about my person into the dirt of the street. I was unable to put the necklace on and could not figure out why, my fatigue was that great. I realized that I had forgotten my amulet of evilsbane tucked under my shirt. Whipping it off I flung the necklace around my neck, used a salve in my pack mixing it with the thistle, and applied it into the deep wound on John Bruzers body. Exhausted I knelt by John's side cradling his head attempting to give him water to drink.
...I am spent. There was nothing more I can do. It was in the hands of the gods now. All that was left that I could do was pray. I watched in dazed amazement as Glorina made healing prayers which were finally able to take effect. Numb I watched John begin to revive. Hardly believing I had succeeded, BlueMist and I carried John to Virgil at the Dundee Temple. There the power and healing might of the gods restored John Bruzer to full and glorious health.
...I think about this journey...this quest for the "Spirit of Enlightenment" that Lord Sarducci so fervently spoke of. I am still not certain of what he speaks. What I do know is that I had to trust my guides and protectors. I had to work with them to succeed in saving John Bruzer's life. I had to practice great patience with my companions. And I had to again trust my self, my own abilities, and not flinch in the face of adversity. I am still dazed. I did succeed. I was so tired by the end of my quest I could hardly believe that I had actually succeeded in become a member of the Order of the Winter Knight.
**entry 8**
Now that it is quiet and all the adulation is over I look at the coin John gave to me. A lucky piece he said it was for him. A lucky piece that he handed on to me. From one rogue to another I am grateful. I need all the luck I can get especially if I have to take cannon rides.
** Kaballoi puts away her writing materials. She wraps her journal in its protective oil cloth and stows it in her pack. The mound of scrawled notes and discarded papers she tosses into the fire place adding to the cheery flames. The very long and much worked over parchment is signed, carefully rolled, and secured with a deep green ribbon decorated with a small sharp green duck feather. The work of many evenings in Cerbie's is complete and she heaves a sigh of relief. This time she pays a young urchin a plat to deliver her scroll to Lord Sarducci. Before the youngster is out the door with her missive Kaballoi is sound asleep slumped in a corner of the Grill. She only twitches occasionally in her slumber, mumbling in her sleep of cannons and fertilizer sacks. **
